The cold and creepy basement was still. The only movements were rats in the corners and spiders spinning their silky webs. The place was covered with layers of ash and dust giving it an eerie look.
At the steps the only bit of light that peeked into the place was blocked for a moment. But then it disappeared as the creature stepped onto the stairs and made his way down into the musty place.
The brute held back the cough that was choking his throat, for some reason he didn't want to show weakness infront of this small pup. He padded on, his front feet going down a step and his back feet following. His pale blue eyes stared straight ahead into the darkness and his tail was straight up behind him.
The coolness irked the male, but he had been in here so many times that he knew the feeling very well. Whenever he descended into this place he felt as if eyes were watching him, and they probably were. Rats and mice were probably making sure that he wasn't here for a small snack.
When the male reached the bottom he turned around and faced the stairs again. Where is that little pup?

Tee waddled along, as usual keeping her pace rather unsteady. She made sure that Akio was always somewhere in sight but sometimes she would get distracted by ash flowing by on a gust of wind or she would choke up when breathing in too much smoke. When this happened she had to speed up a lot in order to be anywhere close to Akio. She was well behind him as he started his descent on the steps and eager not to lose sight of him she ran over to the steps as quick as her short, chubby legs could carry her.
When Tee reached the steps she could barely see down into where the steps lead but she could see Akio. He was a white dog in the middle of the blackest area. Tee now having her fur dark with smoke and ash would easily get lost in this place so she stayed close to Akio.
She made it down the stairs slowly. She was too small to walk down like a normal dog so she hopped down them one at a time. At reaching the bottom she tripped and fell into the large sea of ash and came out coughing yet giggling. She looked to Akio wondering what this place was.

Akio paid no attention to the pup falling in the ash pile. "This," he said, moving his tail in a sweeping motion, "is the Basement. It was hardly burned in the fire. The entrance up there," he nodded his massive white head at the place where they had come it. "is the only place where light meets this place."
This place was not one of Akio's favorite places. The darkness sent chills up his back. When he ventured down here he never really went far in. He always made sure that the light above him was still in a full-shot view.
Akio looked down at the little pup in the pile of ash and gave her a serious look. "This is not some place to play in. If you think about it, it is the perfect place for an ambush." His eyes were hard and cold as he gazed at Tee. He was desperatly hoping she understood every word he had said on this journey so far.

Tee looked around. The basement... she thought. She was desperate to remember everything he said. Tee smiled happily hoping that Akio was pleased with her but his face got serious and so she imitated the expression trying to stay serious which was not easy for the high spirited pup. She tilted her head looking at him. "Okay." she said nodding once more. She looked back at the basement. She knew that she did not want to be coming here often because it would not make Akio happy and he was the only dog she knew here so she just wanted for him to be happy with her.
She looked into the darkness. She did not mind darkness that much. It often became pitch black in the alleyway she used to live in, but this place was different. It was a different kind of dark. The kind of dark that is not comforting. She looked back up at Akio wondering how much longer they had to stay here.

Akio nodded, glad she understood what he was saying. Not wanting to stay any longer he said to the pup, "We're going to go back out of the city now and I'll show you the valley." He turned on his head and started walking up the steps one by one. One of the steps creaked, taunting him to fall into the basements depths once more. He quickened his pace and when he got to the top he waited for the pup to make sure she made it up safely.

Tee was glad to be leaving the darkness of this basement. She turned and watched Akio go up the steps one paw at a time. She knew that she would not be able to do that so she hopped all four paws on a step at a time. She skipped all the way back up to the top. She finally broke out into the sun and sighed, panting heavily. Going up the steps was tough work for her.
She smiled wondering what the valley would look like. Maybe it would be as pretty as the shattered glass building or as big as the city gates or as dark as the basement. Maybe it would have its own special trait. She wagged her tail happily hoping it was as magnificent as everything else had been.

Akio smiled down at the pup, trying to soften himself up a bit. He had found himself oddly serious today. He didn't know what it was. He was kind of on the edge. He felt like one wrong word to him and he'd storm away. He needed to relax. Akio rolled his shoulders. "Let's go," he said.
This time he kept the pup in sight at all times. He walked at her pace, so that they were side by side.
As they got to the gates he let her hobble infront of him. Outside in the fresh air he took a deep breath, tasting almost no ash in his mouth. It was nice, but yet the ash was nice too. It comforted him. He shrugged and walked on towards the Valley.
